In a move set to revolutionize travel on Indian highways, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has announced plans to phase out the existing toll plaza system. Brace yourselves for a future where toll charges will be deducted seamlessly from your bank account based on the distance you traverse on national highways.

Embracing Satellite Technology for Toll Collection

The key to this innovative system lies in the integration of satellite technology and GPS-enabled vehicle number plates. As your vehicle cruises along the highways, its movement will be tracked via satellite, and the toll fee will be calculated accordingly. This cutting-edge system, slated for implementation by March 2024, aims to streamline the toll collection process, eliminating the need for physical toll plazas altogether.

Saving Time and Fuel, One Journey at a Time

Minister Gadkari highlighted the numerous benefits of this technological leap, citing the substantial reduction in travel time between major cities like Mumbai and Pune – from a grueling 9 hours to a mere 2-hour commute. By minimizing stops at toll booths, not only will precious time be saved but fuel efficiency will also improve, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable and cost-effective travel experience.

A Fair Trade-off for Better Infrastructure

While acknowledging the concerns raised by some truckers’ associations regarding potential cost implications, Gadkari defended the move as a necessary step toward improving India’s infrastructure. He emphasized that the toll charges collected would be proportional to the distance traveled and would contribute to the maintenance and development of highways under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.

With time and fuel savings on the horizon, this technological leap aims to enhance the overall experience for commuters while paving the way for a more connected and sustainable transportation network across the nation.
