An Indian doctor stranded in Ukraine has refused to leave the war-torn country without his pet panther and jaguar. Earlier last week, several pet-owners took a sigh of relief after the Indian embassy allowed stranded Indians in Ukraine to return to the country with their dogs and cats.

However, Girikumar Patil, has been left to fend for himself and is currently biding his time in the basement at his residence with his two pet big cats. The 40-year-old doctor was quoted in a BBC report saying, “My big cats have been spending nights in the basement with me. There has been a lot of bombing happening around us. The cats are scared. They are eating less. I can’t leave them.”

No stranger to war like situations, Patil has claimed that this is the second war he is living through, but this one is scarier for him. Patil is a proud owner of a 20-month-old jaguar and 6-month-old panther cub.

The Facts of the Matter

Amid the increasing geopolitical tension caused due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, India is trying to evacuate as many Indians from Ukraine as possible. Under Operation Ganga, thousands of Indian students have so far been brought back to India. Moreover, after a significant amount of outrage and hysteria, India has also allowed Indian students to bring back their pets back to India.

Meanwhile, an Indian doctor stranded in the war-torn country, is choosing to stay put and see through the war. The Andhra Pradesh based doctor has chosen to stay in Ukraine and not leave without his two pets – a jaguar and a panther.

It’s the Indian Doctor’s Second War

It should be noted that the 40-year-old doctor is no stranger to tense wars. Back in 2014, he was living in Luhansk where Russian rebels were fighting with Ukrainian. During one of the escalated fights, his home was completely destroyed. Further, he had also opened an Indian restaurant that was destroyed due to the fighting as well.

“This is the second war I am living through. But this is scarier. Now I am stuck in a war zone. This time I am really worried. My parents have been calling me and asking me to come home, but I can’t leave the animals,” he was quoted saying in a BBC report.
