A Massachusetts family and community are reeling after a high school student died last Friday in a suspected case linked to the viral ‘One Chip Challenge.’ The dangerous social media stunt, which dares participants to eat an extremely spicy chip, has prompted renewed warnings about peer pressure and online trends.

Participating in Viral Social Media Stunt

A Massachusetts family is mourning the loss of their 14-year-old son after he participated in the viral ‘One Chip Challenge,’ which dares people to eat an extremely spicy tortilla chip. Harris Wolobah, a sophomore at Doherty Memorial High School in Worcester, ate a Carolina Reaper pepper chip at school last Friday after being dared by a classmate. He soon complained of stomach pain and went home early, but was later found unconscious by his brother.

Rushed to Hospital, Pronounced Dead

Harris was rushed to the hospital where he was sadly pronounced dead shortly after. While the medical examiner’s report is still pending, Harris’ mother believes he died from complications related to the social media stunt. She expressed regret that the school nurse had sent Harris home instead of directly to the emergency room.

The Dangers of the Challenge

The One Chip Challenge, which has circulated online for years, involves eating a tortilla chip made with two of the world’s hottest peppers – the Carolina Reaper and Scorpion. Participants attempt to endure the heat for as long as possible before giving in to food or drink. However, the chip maker warns that it should only be consumed by adults and can cause adverse reactions.

Community Mourns Rising Star

Harris was described by his coaches and teachers as a rising basketball star and wonderful student with a bright future ahead. His sudden passing has left the community in mourning. A grief counseling team has been made available to students and faculty processing the tragic loss.

Medical Warnings About Spicy Foods

Medical experts warn that extremely spicy foods can cause more than just mouth and stomach pain. They caution that throat swelling, heart palpitations, and breathing issues can also occur. Parents are being urged to discuss social media challenges and peer pressure with their children. While Harris’ case appears to be the first fatality associated with the One Chip Challenge, it serves as a sobering reminder that viral trends can have serious real-world consequences.
