Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar has passed away at the age of 92. She breathed her last at 8:12 am in Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital, where she was admitted after testing COVID-19 positive on January 8. She was also diagnosed with pneumonia and was admitted to the ICU. On January 28, she showed signs of improvement and was taken off the ventilator. However, on Feb. 5, her health deteriorated. Her sister, Asha Bhosle, among others, visited the hospital yesterday. However, the veteran singer left for her heavenly adobe today due to multi-organ failure.

Her body is to be taken to Shivaji Park for people to pay homage, where the last rites will also be performed. According to government sources, a two-day national mourning will be observed and the national flag will fly at half-mast, as a mark of respect for the singer.

The demise of  Lata Mangeshkar, often referred to as the “Nightingale of India”, has left one and all in grief. In a series of tweets, PM Modi expressed his “anguish” and hailed her as a “stalwart of Indian culture.” Recollecting his earlier interactions, he added that Lata Didi “wanted to see a strong and developed India.” Several other prominent figures have expressed their grief over the unfortunate loss. Rahul Gandhi, Nitin Gadkari, Sanjay Raut, among many, offered their condolences.

In her career spanning seven decades, Lata Mangeshkar has sung over 30,000 songs in different languages. She is the recipient of several awards, including the Baba Saheb Phalke Award and the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award. She has also been conferred with “Officer de la Legion d’Honneur”, the highest civilian award in France. Besides, “The Melody Queen” is the recipient of several awards such as National Film Awards and honorary doctorates.
