In a shocking incident reported from Odisha, an elephant not only killed a 70-year-old woman, but also returned to then trample her corpse that was on the funeral pyre. The incident was reported from Mayurbhanj district in Odisha and the deceased woman was identified as Maya Murmu.

According to reports, Maya was out and about like any other day and was collecting water from a tube well on June 9, Thursday. This was when she received the wrath of the elephant who had reportedly strayed from the Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary. The enraged elephant reportedly trampled Maya.

Although she was rushed to the nearby hospital for immediate treatment, she succumbed to her injuries the same day. On the evening of June 9, the family of the deceased woman got together for the woman’s last rites.

Maya was set on her funeral pyre and the family was about to conduct the final rights when the elephant emerged again and snatched the corpse away from the pyre. The tusker trampled the lifeless body of the 70-year-old woman, threw it away with its trunk and fled the scene.

After the horrific incident, the family finally managed to perform the last rites. It should be noted that many researchers and people who have worked closely around elephants have speculated that elephants have strong memory, and often hold grudges.
