A Mercedes Maybach S650 armored vehicle has been added to PM’s convoy which is worth 12 Crore Indian Rupees. Previously, he used a Range Rover Vogue, Toyota Land Cruiser and a BMW car. However, the car costs much less than what is being projected in the media. According to the sources, the car costs one third of the price reported.

The Mercedes-Maybach S650 supposedly has better protective features as it can even power through 15 KG of TNT explosion.

Bullets, Explosives Gas Attack Resisting Vehicle

Mercedes-Maybach launched the S600 Guard in India last year for 10.5 crore and the S650 can cost more than 12 crore. The S650 Guard body and the windows can withstand hardened steel core bullets like those of AK-47 rifles. It also has an Explosive Resistant Vehicle (ERV) 2010 rating and the occupants of the vehicle are protected from a 15kg TNT explosion from a distance of only 2 meters. The cabin also receives a separate air supply in case of a gas attack.

The new Maybach 650 armored car was spotted at the Hyderabad House where Modi was present to welcome President Putin of Russia. Later, the car was identified as part of his convoy.

Replacement Routines of Protective Cars for Indian PMs

The security detail of the Special Protection Group, or SPG, follows a norm of six years to replace vehicles used by people whom they are tasked to protect. PM Modi used the previous car for eight year which became a concern for SPG. A security audit flagged this and raised concern that it would weaken security, sources said.

Decisions on buying assets for enhancing a protectee’s security are based on threat perception. They are decided by the SPG without taking the views of the people whom they protect, sources said.

“The widespread discussions on the security features of the protectee’s car is not in national interest as it puts in public domain a lot of unnecessary detail. This only threatens the life of the protective,” an official with direct knowledge of the matter told news agency NDTV.

According to Sources, PM Modi has not shared any preference on cars, but Congress chief Sonia Gandhi used Range Rovers that were bought for former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh.

Criticism From Opposition

Former Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar, who is also a Rajya Sabha member from TMC, criticized PM Modi on Twitter, accusing him of indulging in vanity and asserting that PM Modi would never leave the perks even after he is defeated.

Senior advocate Prashant Bhushan, spoke up against PM Modi over the addition of the latest Mercedes car in his convoy. Disregarding the fact that the car is for the post of Prime Minister of India and not for PM Modi’s personal use, Bhushan like Sircar, accused PM for indulging in luxury.
