In a concerning display of vaccine hesitancy reported from Puducherry, a machete wielding man climbed up a tree to avoid getting COVID-19 vaccination. Initially the man was tried to pretend that he was chopping of branches of the trees where he had climbed. After the health authorities asked whether he had gotten himself vaccinated he denied so. He further challenged the health care workers to jab him with the vaccine, pointing the machete at them.
The incident comes at a time when the concerns around increase in caseload is at its all-time high. Further, a potential third wave of the pandemic is also anticipated by people due to the highly transmissible Omicron variant.

As we inch towards 2022, the nation is witnessing a strange time. The healthcare system that comprises of lakhs of doctors are taking to streets in a strike, the daily new COVID-19 cases are again on the rise, and the Omicron variant of the virus has been identified in hundreds of people so far.
Vaccination in such a situation is pertinent, not only for people, but also for the healthcare infrastructure as it is likely to get less pressurized when a significant portion of the nation is vaccinated. And yet, vaccine hesitancy is a cause of concern.
According to a study by Local Circles conducted in October 2021, 11.59 crore Indians were reported to be hesitant of the vaccine. A man from Puducherry recently gave the evidence of the vaccine hesitancy thatโs spread across the country.

The Facts of the Matter
While healthcare workers put their lives on line every day to serve COVID-19 patient, a man in Puducherry took vaccine hesitancy to a whole different level. According to reports, the man jumped on a tree to avoid getting jabbed when health workers were on a drive to administer COVID-19 vaccine to those who remained uninoculated.
The entire incident was recorded on video and since has been going viral on social media. It should be noted that the health workers are providing door-to-door vaccination to accelerate the Puducherry governmentโs initiative of 100% vaccination in the U/T.
What Does the Video Show
The video shows a man wielding a machete sitting on top of a tree. He is surrounded by onlookers, pedestrians and healthcare workers. The health care workers try to convince him to come town to get vaccinated. However, the man in his local language can be heard saying, โI will not take the vaccine, you canโt get me.โ

The incident was reported from the Konnerikuppam village, Puducherry. The health authorities claimed that on seeing them coming around, the man swiftly climbed on top of the tree. Initially the man pretended to cut the branches of the tree by his machete.
Not the First Such Incident from Puducherry
When the authorities asked him whether he got vaccinated, he replied that he hadnโt. He also pointed the machete at them and challenged them to climb the tree and jab him. In the end, the health workers left the man to himself. With no option left, the health workers eventually left the place.
It should be noted that this was not an isolated event. Earlier, an old woman in Mettupalayam, Puducherry also drove the healthcare workers away. The elderly woman pretended to be posessed with the Goddess Mariamman (Mariyathai), to wade off the the Asha workers.
