Rejected twice by Indian army, a Tamil Nadu youth recently joined Ukraine in its fight against the ongoing Russian invasion. The 21-year-old youth has been identified as Sainikhesh Ravichandran. Sainikhesh had applied twice to the Indian Army, but couldn’t make it through because of his height.

However, to serve a greater purpose, he chose to apply for the paramilitary forces in Ukraine. A few days ago, intelligence officials visited his residence in Coimbatore and met his parents. In a report to the Centre, the intelligence officials described the youth’s background, his character and conduct, and the probable reason why he chose to take side with the Ukrainian forces during the ongoing crisis.

Sainikhesh is now fighting as part of the Georgian National Legion paramilitary unit, a unit which also comprises of volunteers.

The Facts of the Matter

When a person wants to save lives by fighting on a battlefield, does it matter if he fights for his own country or a country that is at war. A 21-year-old youth from Tamil Nadu has raised the conundrum for many. The aerospace engineering student was earlier rejected by the Indian Army twice because of his height. However, after Russia’s military force started shelling against Ukraine and initiated its invasion, 21-year-old Sainikhesh Ravichandran decided to fight for Ukraine against the invasion.

Portraits of Soldiers Hung Across Youth’s Room

A few days ago, intelligence officers took to the youth’s home to understand why the youth may have taken arms against Russia. According to a TOI report, when a police official visited Sainikhesh’s residence and saw his room, he found portraits of soldiers hung across the room. The intelligence officers reportedly submitted a report to the Centre where it described Sainikhesh’s family background, his conduct and the reason he may have joined Ukraine.

Tamil Nadu Youth Tried Joining Indian and US Army

Reportedly, the 21-year-old youth had tried joining the Indian Army after class 12th, but couldn’t make it because of his height. Sainikhesh also reached out to the US consulate to try and see if he could join the American Army. When he realized that his dream of joining an Army is not materializing, he enrolled at the National Aerospace University in Kharkiv back in 2018.

Destiny Puts Youth in Kharkiv During Invasion

According to Sainikhesh’s family, he was “normal” during his team at the National Aerospace University. He also came to India for a visit back in July last year and stayed with his family for a month. Meanwhile, when Russia initiated its invasion against Ukraine, Sainikhesh could not be reached for four days. That’s when his family read reports of a certain Tamil Nadu man joining the Ukrainian forces.

Family Tries Convincing Sainikhesh to Come Back

The shocked family tried to confirm whether it was their son who had joined the forces. When the family sent an email to the embassy, they received no response. After a few days, the embassy contacted the family and sought more details about an incommunicado Sainikhesh. A few days later the youth contacted the family himself and told them that he had joined the paramilitary force.

Sainikhesh’s family tried to convince him to return, however, he is in no mood to hang his uniform and plans to serve for as long as he can. Meanwhile, his family will be meeting State and Union government officials and will seek their help in bringing Sainikhesh back.
