On Thursday, according to Russian state television, the sinking of its Naval vessel Moskva declared the advent of World War III. While Ukraine asserts that their two Neptune anti – ship missiles had hit the Moskva resulting in its sinking, Russia’s Defence Minister says that the flagship Black Sea missile cruiser had sunk because of an unexplained fire which ignited ammunition. However 500 crew members are hurriedly evacuated.
The Facts of the Matter
While Russia and Ukraine are busy giving different accounts for the sinking of the Black Sea fleet’s flagship, Ukraine with this attack has made the world witness the power of a small country but it is a symbolic blow to Russia as the flagship of Russia’s Black Sea fleet, the Moskva was one of its most visible assets in the Ukraine war. According to NPR’s Greg Myre Reports, it reinforces that Ukraine troops can still deliver powerful blows by tackling the situation creatively.

Why Russia could not detect the missiles?
The Subsonic Neptune is based on the Old Soviet Kh – 35 anti – ship missile and could be operated from coastal areas, which means even if it was operated from an area of intense Russian military activity, the Russians appears not to have been aware of it until it was too late. Reports say that Moskva’s crew may had been distracted by the two Turkish supplied drones when the firing of the missiles took place from a place close to Odesa.
What are the two sides said?
Ukraine claims that their two Neptune anti –ship missiles about 60 miles off the coast of Odesa had hit the vessel which caused its sinking. Russian Defence officials stated that its an accident, as the vessel sank while being towed to shore in a stormy weather – though weather reports indicate that the weather was mild at Black Sea. However, US and Western defense officials seem to favor the Ukrainian account.
