In the war broke out zone, amidst the fear of Russians attack, the soldiers in Odessa, Ukraine, took their time to buy flowers for friends and family on International Women’s Day to create hope for living even in the dark times.

Odessa has a population of over one million people and is an important port for Ukraine’s economy. Local residents have started filling bags with sand on the shore to put up barriers and participating in weapons training as the fear of an invasion grows as the Russian military moves into Ukraine.

Women Need To Be Protected

“I bought flowers, oddly enough, for my mother-in-law and my wife to congratulate them on March 8,” said Yuriy, a reservist in Ukraine’s Territorial Defence forces as per the Reuters.

“War or no war, our women need to be protected, loved and respected”, he further added.

Ukraine Soldiers Spread Hope Amid the War

The streets of Ukraine blossomed with colourful flowers as the street vendor sells varieties of flowers at a market, while they fear the attack of Russians. Not just the soldiers but several people came forward to buy flowers for the women at their homes.

Soldier Dmitriy was seen holding pink and yellow tulips that he had purchased for his female soldiers.

“They [women] serve in the army, they safeguard our country, they assist us, they offer optimism… we must never forget them,” he said, as quoted by Reuters.

Men Pay their Respects and Gratitude with Flowers

International Women’s Day celebrates women’s accomplishments and raises awareness about the fight for gender equality. It has a lengthy history in eastern cultures.

Men in Europe and the former Soviet Union usually commemorate the day by buying flowers or presents for women.

Alena, a flower dealer, tied a bouquet of blue and yellow tulips, Ukraine’s national colours. She explained, “I made it for peace, for peace everywhere.”

Russian Women Choose Not to Celebrate

While Ukraine celebrated Women’s Day, Russian women were not in the mood to rejoice and instead concentrated on calling to put an end to the war.

“The finest gift for March 8 is that we and our loved ones will no longer have to suffer because of what is occurring,” Maria Tunkara, a feminist and racism blogger, wrote on her Instagram post.

Rus President Vladimir Putin Wishes the Women of Country

On International Women’s Day, Russian President Vladimir Putin honoured female military members and healthcare professionals in a video greeting, according to the Tass news agency.

“A special word of respect to the ladies who are serving in the ranks of the Russian Armed Forces,” Putin added, praising them for their dedication.
