Veteran Indian leader and Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh recently died at 82 and condolences have since started pouring in on social media. Mulayam Singh’s demise was confirmed by his son Akhilesh Yadav. “My respected father and everyone’s leader is no more – Akhilesh Yadav,” read the on Samajwadi Party’s Twitter handle.
The 82-year-old three-time Uttar Pradesh CM was being treated at the Medanta Hospital, Gurgaon and was in ICU. The hospital confirmed that he was administered life-saving drugs. The SP supremo had been admitted to the hospital since August 22 due to age-related illness. He was also taken to the hospital earlier in July.
In its statement, Samajwadi Party gave further details regarding Mr. Singh’s death. “SP Patron and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav is no more. He breathed his last at 8:15 am today. He was admitted in Medanta since August 22. Was on ventilator since 2 October. The body of the SP Patron will be taken to Saifai in Etawah district of Uttar Pradesh,” the statement read.
After the news of Mr. Singh’s passing away broke, politicians from all fronts broke ranks to condole his death and pay tributes. PM Modi, newly elected President Murmu, Congress secretary Priyanka Gandhi and many others paid their tributes on social media.
The Facts of the Matter
Days after he was hospitalized and later rushed to ICU, Samajwadi Party founder and veteran leader Mulayam Singh passed away earlier on Monday. Mulayam Singh, a three-time Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, was being treated at the Medanta Hospital, Gurgaon. In its confirmation, the hospital reported administering life-saving drugs to Mr. Singh.

Party Issues Detailed Statement
In a statement, Samajwadi Party noted that Mr. Singh was on ventilator after his condition deteriorating earlier this month. “SP Patron and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav is no more. He breathed his last at 8:15 am today,” the statement read.
“He was admitted in Medanta since August 22. Was on ventilator since 2 October. The body of the SP Patron will be taken to Saifai in Etawah district of Uttar Pradesh,” the party’s statement further added.
3-Day State Mourning in UP
Following Mr, Singh’s passing, the Uttar Pradesh government announced a three-day state mourning. His final rites will be performed with complete state honours, confirmed current Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath.
Political Leaders Break Ranks to Pay Tributes
Following his death, popular political leaders from all faction broke ranks to pay their tributes. Prime Minister Modi took to Twitter and wrote – “I had many interactions with Mulayam Singh Yadav Ji when we served as Chief Ministers of our respective states. The close association continued and I always looked forward to hearing his views. His demise pains me. Condolences to his family and lakhs of supporters. Om Shanti.”

The Life & Times of Mulayam Singh Yadav (1939 – 2022)
Mulayam Singh Yadav was a wrestler-turned-teacher-turned-politician. Born on November 22, 1939, he completed his Masters in political science and forayed into the world of politics in 1967 by being elected the MLA of Etawah. He represented the then popular Samyukt Socialist Party.
Becoming Face of Opposition
Steadily and gradually, he climbed rungs of the political ladder by first becoming the state minister in 1977 and then being elected the president of the Lok Dal in 1980.
He emerged as the face of the opposition in UP until 1985 when Lok Dal Party split, prompting Mr. Singh to launch the Krantikari Morcha Party.

Serving as CM, Founding SP
Mulayam Singh served as the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh thrice (1989-1991, 1993-1995, 2003-2007), and also served as the Union defence minister for a brief period of 1996-1998.
Prior to his second stint as the state CM, Mulayam Singh founded the now popular Samajwadi Party. From a small party made of fringe elements, the party has now grown into one of the largest regional parties in the nation.
