Veteran Tamil comedian and actor RS Shivaji, known for his work in over 100 films, passed away in Chennai on Saturday at the age of 66 due to health complications.

Prolific Career Spanning Over 4 Decades

Shivaji, born in 1956 in Chennai, was the son of actor-producer MR Santhanam. He made his acting debut in the 1980s and went on to establish himself as one of the most familiar faces in Tamil cinema over a prolific career spanning more than four decades.

The actor was best known for his comedic roles and his frequent collaborations with Ulaganayagan Kamal Haasan and his production house Raaj Kamal Films International. Some of his most memorable performances were in hit films like Apoorva Sagodharargal, Michael Madana Kama Rajan, Guna, Anbe Sivam and Dasavathaaram.

Shivaji’s last on-screen appearance was in the Yogi Babu-starrer Lucky Man, which released on September 1, 2023. His demise comes as a huge loss to the Tamil film industry.

Condolences Pour in from Film Fraternity

As soon as the news of Shivaji’s demise broke, members of the film fraternity took to social media to offer their condolences.

Trade analyst Ramesh Bala tweeted, “Popular Tamil Character/Comedy Actor #RSShivaji passed away in Chennai this morning. He acted in this Friday release #LuckyMan and has done several memorable roles including #ApoorvaSagodharargal etc May his soul RIP!”

Shivaji’s death has left a void in Tamil cinema that can never be filled. The industry has lost a gifted actor and a pioneer of comedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones in this difficult time.
