The Theme of World Tuberculosis Day 2022
‘Invest to End TB. Save Lives,’ is the subject of World TB Day this year. It highlights the crucial need of investing resources in the fight against tuberculosis and meeting global leaders’ commitments to eradicate the disease.
History of World Tuberculosis Day
The date honours Dr Robert Koch’s announcement on March 24, 1882, of the discovery of the bacteria that causes tuberculosis, which paved the path for detecting and curing this infectious disease.
Every day, approximately 4000 people die from tuberculosis (TB), and nearly 28,000 people become infected with this avoidable and treatable disease. Since the year 2000, global efforts to eliminate tuberculosis have saved an estimated 63 million lives,” as per the WHO.
Significance of World Tuberculosis Day
Tuberculosis is an old illness that affects about 2 billion people globally. The World Health Organization says 10.4 million people contracted tuberculosis in 2016, with 1.7 million people succumbing from the disease.
Nevertheless, it is not regarded as a significant crisis due to various misconceptions. However, increasing awareness of the disease can aid those who are at serious risk and seeking treatment. The disease could be treated and tuberculosis could be eradicated if those who are in danger are adequately vaccinated.
What is the Treatment for Tuberculosis?
Tuberculosis, which affects the health of individuals all over the world, can be cured if caught early; therefore, if a person has any of the symptoms, they should seek medical advice. Antibiotics may also be taken as part of the treatment.
What Happens to the TB Patients?
Tuberculosis (TB) is a condition caused by germs that are transmitted through the air from one person to another. TB most commonly affects the lungs, but it can also damage the brain, kidneys, or spine. If a patient with tuberculosis does not receive treatment, they may die.
