Zerodha co-founder Nithin Kamath went bald during wife’s cancer treatment. On Tuesday, the fintech startup co-founder wished people a happy women’s day on Twitter and shared a blog penned by his wife in which she shared anecdotes of her journey after being diagnosed with cancer, the importance of regular health-checkups, and more.

Reportedly, Nithin Kamath’s wife Seema was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier last year in November. In her blog post, Seema revealed that she and her husband had spoken often about how cancer is taboo in India and that it is important for those who are surviving it, to speak about it.

It was then that the couple decided to go bald together. “Having a bald Nithin around me has helped me now make me like my new hairstyle. I might just end up continuing to remain bald even after my chemo,” Seema wrote in her blog.

The Facts of the Matter

If cancer is hell, then chemotherapy is the steps on which a person has to put their wobbly feet on and walk, no matter what the cost. The excruciating course of treatment is not only expensive, but is also known for taking a toll on the patient’s body, and their will to survive. From not being able to sleep, due to extreme exhaustion, to dehydration and diarrhea, to having a depressive disposition, chemotherapy is a can of worms, to say the least.

At such a time, if you’re a patient’s partner or relative stands by them and guides them with their words and actions, it helps with the recovery and also makes day-to-day living a tad easier. Recently, fintech startup Zerodha co-founder Nithin Kamath took to Twitter and shared his wife’s cancer journey on the occasion of women’s day.

“Cancer is Taboo in Our Country..”

In the blog post titled ‘I am the healthiest person I know, and I got cancer!’, Seema wrote that she was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer in November 2021. She added that she hadn’t spoken about the illness to anyone other than her immediate friends and family.

“While I am generally a private person, I also realized while going through all the tests and conversations trying to find the best doctor, that maybe I am not talking about it also because like mental illness, cancer is also a taboo in our country,” she wrote.

How the Cancer was Diagnosed

She shared that during one of her full-body check-ups, a small lump was discovered in her right breast. Although she was showing no symptoms, she met an oncologist and a PET scan confirmed that the lump was cancerous and localized.

Surgery Followed by Chemotherapy Sessions

After a lot of chaos and confusion, she and her husband decided to get treated for the cancer in India itself. After a surgery (mastectomy), Seema underwent 4 chemotherapy sessions with an interval of 21 days, followed by 20 days of radiation.

Speaking about side-effects of chemotherapy, Seema wrote, “It felt like being run over by a truck for the next 5 to 7 days. Weakness, joint pain, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, no sense of taste, and more.”

Nithin Decides to Go Bald to Show Support

Her doctors warned her about one of the major chemo side-effects, hair loss. To stand by her side, the Zerodha co-founder also decided to go bald. “By now, both Nithin and I have spoken multiple times about how cancer is taboo and why it is important for those affected to speak openly about it. And so, we both went bald at the same time,” Seema’s blog read.

“Having a bald Nithin around me has helped me now make me like my new hairstyle. I might just end up continuing to remain bald even after my chemo,” she further added.
