In a precautionary tale of avoiding leftover food, a 19-year-old Massachusetts-based student reportedly lost his fingers and both of his legs after he ate leftover noodles. While the incident dates back to 2021, the incident has once again been topic of conversation, thanks to a YouTube video that was recently rediscovered.

The 19-year-old had consumed rice, chicken, and lo mein and experienced abdominal pain and purple skin soon after. The New England Journal of Medicine reported that teenagers’ condition quickly declined, experiencing abnormal breathing, high blood pressure, and vomiting. The student had been healthy overall with regular drinking and smoking habits.

Further tests revealed that the student had contracted meningococcal purpura fulminan disease, which caused his stiff neck, nausea, respiratory collapse, shock, and organ failure. Reportedly, the student developed a rare case of Purpura fulminan, caused by bacteria and brings symptoms such as sudden fever and vomiting.

Over the course of his hospital stay, the student’s condition worsened, and he developed necrosis, the death of tissue and cells. At that point, doctors had to amputate his legs and fingers. He also needed a pacemaker for 13 days to treat his cardiac dysfunction.

The medical team learned that although the student had received a first dose of the meningococcal vaccine, he never received the recommended booster. Further, his roommate also ate the leftover food and vomited.

The Facts of the Matter

Eating leftovers can be a convenient and comforting option, but it can also carry hidden dangers that can be irreparable. A 19-year-old Massachusetts college student learned this lesson the hard way after he consumed leftover rice, chicken, and lo mein from a local restaurant.

What started as abdominal pain and purple skin turned into multiple organ failure and eventually led to the amputation of both his legs and all his fingers.

Student Consumed Leftover Lo Mein

According to a case report from Massachusetts General Hospital, the student consumed rice, chicken, and lo mein leftovers from a restaurant. Around 20 hours after the meal, he started experiencing abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting, followed by muscle aches, shortness of breath, and headaches.

As his condition worsened, the student began developing purplish patches on his face, chest, abdomen, arms, and legs, which is not a typical symptom of lo mein noodles. Although his friend who had eaten from the same noodle stash also got sick, his condition wasn’t as severe.

Student’s Condition Deteriorates

When the student’s shortness of breath grew worse and his blood pressure dropped, he was rushed to the emergency room, where he was given oxygen and a range of medications. As his condition was life-threatening, he was soon transferred to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) of Massachusetts General Hospital.

Doctors discovered that he had been infected with a deadly bacteria called Neisseria meningitidis, which had entered his bloodstream and was causing multiple organ failure. Neisseria meningitidis is highly contagious and can be transmitted via different activities, such as inhaling droplets or sharing food or utensils with an infected person.

Doctors Amputate 19-Year-Old’s Legs

The 19-year-old New England condition continued to worsen, and he developed a rare condition called purpura fulminans. Doctors had to amputate different parts of the student’s fingers and both of his legs below his knees. Fortunately, he survived the ordeal and is currently recovering from the experience.

The student’s case highlights the importance of taking precautions when handling, storing, and eating leftovers. It is essential to keep the leftovers from being contaminated before storing them and to use only clean containers to store food.
