In Tamil Nadu, an elderly woman was rescued after being locked up for 10 years by her two sons. According to reports, one of the sons is a retired police officer while other is a government employee at Doordarshan.
It should be noted that the woman’s age is currently disputed, with some media reports stating that she is 72-years-old while others claiming she is 62-years-old. A case has been registered the two sons under the Senior Citizen Act 2007.
Reportedly, the two sons used to live elsewhere while their mother was locked up in a Thanjavur home. The sons used to provide some food and biscuits once a week and kept their mother confided for years. The entire ordeal was brought to attention after video clips of the elderly woman lying naked in a frail state inside the home went viral on social media.
The elderly woman was rescued by social welfare department after it received a call from an unknown person about the woman’s condition. Following the elderly woman’s rescue, the District Collector ordered legal actions against the sons.
The Facts of the Matter
Imagine being in your sixties or seventies and being at the mercy of your children. If you’re lucky, your children will take care of you, given how in India, the onus of taking care of one’s elderly lies on their children and grandchildren. However, what happens if the children leave you be on your own, lock you up in a confinement, and do the bare-minimum of providing meals to you.
An elderly woman in Tamil Nadu’s Thanjavur suffered the ordeal mentioned above when her two sons locked her up in her house for 10 years. The woman was recently rescued by the social welfare department personnel on Friday.

Video of Woman’s Horrific Ordeal Went Viral
The woman’s horrific ordeal was brought to the attention of locals after some video clips of her lying naked in her home in a frail physical condition went viral on social media. Soon locals alerted the social welfare department about the woman’s condition. The department staffers swung into action and along with the police rushed to the house in Fifth Street, Kavery Nagar.
Elderly Woman Reacted in Violent Way Due to Prolonged Isolation
After breaking open the house, the social welfare personnel were horrified to see the woman’s ordeal. The woman could hardly get up and immediately reacted in a violent way as she had no interaction with people for years. The woman was provided clothes and was rushed to the hospital where she will now receive psychiatric treatment.
As per the preliminary reports, the woman, identified as Gnanjothi, suffered the loss of her husband in 2009. She was under the care of her daughter who also passed away about two years after Gnanjothi’s husband’s demise.
One Son a Retd Police Officer, Other a Doordarshan Employee
The woman’s two sons – a now retired police officer, and a Doordarshan employee – were not willing to take care of her ailing mother. They eventually locked up the woman at her residence and kept her in that situation for about 10 years.
The sons locked the residence’s main gate and front door for outside. For 10 years, they used to provide the elderly mother some biscuits and food once a week. Gnanjothi was reportedly at the mercy of some neighbours who used to attend to her with food or water.
District Collector Orders Legal Action Against Sons
Following the woman’s rescue, District collector ordered a legal action against the two sons. According to social welfare officer, Venkatesan, the woman’s govt employee son didn’t provide for her ailing mother despite receiving pensions.
The two sons are now charged under sections of the Senior Citizen Act, 2007;
