Imran Khan, Pakistan’s former prime minister, was sentenced on Saturday to three years in prison for illegally selling state gifts and was disqualified from participating in politics for five years. The 70 year old was found guilty of illegal selling of gifts he received while in office. Khan, who has denied any wrongdoing, will appeal the court’s decision. Islamabad’s district and sessions Judge Humayun Dilawar issued the verdict in the Toshakhana corruption case that had been filed against Khan on the complaint of the Election Commission of Pakistan for failing to disclose details of the said gifts. Khan’s legal team feels they were not given a chance to present witnesses nor was time given to argue the case.
What is Toshakhana Corruption Case?
The former cricketer-turned-politician’s dealings with the Toshakhana and the sale of state gifts generated a public outcry and was elevated to a major issue in national politics following the Election Commission of Pakistan’s decision to disqualified him on October 21, 2022 for allegedly fabricating “false statements and incorrect declaration”. This department, which is part of the Cabinet division, holds presents given to the ruler and other government servants by heads of foreign nations and other notable personalities.
