In an astonishing moment caught on cam, a vigilant elephant was able to alert zoo worker to save the life of a drowning antelope and was rewarded for the display of its intelligence, compassion and empathy. The incident occurred at Guatemala City’s La Aurora Zoo and was brought to fore by Maria Diaz, a zoo visitor who witnessed the heart-stopping ordeal.

The hair-raising video making rounds of social media shows an Asian elephant bellowing trumpet repeatedly. The video also shows the elephant pointing its trunk to a small water body where an antelope is struggling to keep its neck barely out of the water.

The anxious elephant can be seen pacing around the small pool of water where the antelope is struggling and drowning further every passing minute. Showing some timely empathy and intelligence, that most people may not expect from even humans, let alone animals, the elephant raised an SOS.

Bellowing its trumpet, the gentle giant made sure that the zoo worker could come rushing at the place and take stock of the matters. As soon as the zoo worker saw the drowning antelope, it quickly rescued him.

The Facts of the Matter

Not all heroes have capes, some just have trunks. Recently, a hero elephant saved the life of a drowning antelope by raising alarm and pointing its trunk at the small pool of water where the antelope was drowning. The incident transpired earlier at the La Aurora Zoo in Guatemala City and its video was capture by a visitor called Maria Diaz.

The hero elephant is named β€˜Trompita’ and she’s 60-years-old.

What Does the Video Show?

The video shows 60-year-old Asian elephant Trompita pacing around a pool in a state of agitation and anxiety. The elephant soon bellows its trumpet and even tries to point towards the pool where an antelope is struggling to not be drowned. Meanwhile, one can also see the antelope in the pool barely able to stay afloat with its horns on top of the pool. Trompita again points its trunk towards the drowning antelope and continues to trumpet as loudly as it could to get timely attention.

Thankfully, a zoo worker enters the elephant enclosure at the right time and rushes to rescue the antelope before it could struggle any further. As the deer is lifted out of water and is freed to join its herd once again, Trompita can be seen finally calming down.

β€œSomething very beautiful”: Witness Writes Account

On the Facebook post, Maria Diaz wrote – β€˜Today, I was lucky enough to witness something very beautiful. An elephant seemed desperate to warn zookeepers that an antelope was drowning. In the end, it was rescued by a brave worker.”

It should be noted that the 60-year-old Asian elephant has been at the Guatemala-based zoo for the past 14 years. Prior to her days at zoo, she was in a local circus where she was raised to perform routines.

Trompita Rewarded with Watermelon, Carrots, Peanuts

According to Alejandro Striedinger, the zoo vet, Trompita the elephant has showed affinity towards the antelope as she shares enclosure with the species. Following her display of compassion and comprehension, she was rewarded by the Zoo authorities. She was rewarded with watermelon, peanuts, and carrots. Meanwhile, the zoo worker who rushed to save the antelope from drowning was given a certificate.
