Another acid attack has been reported from Delhi, where two bike borne men threw acid on a 17-year-old school girl. The distressing incident was caught on CCTV, video of which is making rounds of social media. Following the incident, Delhi Commission of Women chief Swati Maliwal, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, and other leaders have taken to Twitter to condemn the incident.

According to reports, the 17-year-old girl is in a critical condition, and is currently undergoing treatment at the Safdarjung hospital. The incident occurred in Delhi’s Dwarka area earlier on Tuesday morning. It remains unclear whether the accused youths were juvenile or adult and reports are stating that the accused and victims were neighbours.

Harsha Vardhan, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka), was quoted in a News18 report saying, “The girl was with her younger sister at the time of the incident. She has raised suspicion over two persons known to them. While one person has been detained, further investigation into the matter is on”.

Following the incident, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal took to Twitter and said, “This cannot be tolerated at all. How did the criminals get so much courage? The criminals should be given the strictest punishment. The safety of every girl child in Delhi is important to us.”

The Facts of the Matter

In the last five years, as many as 1,079 acid attacks were reported in India.

Meaning over one thousand women had their dreams crushed, their freedom challenged, identity attacked, and their lives completely altered. Shockingly enough, it is estimated that about 60% of such cases go under reported, and the actual number of cases are estimated to be 1,000 every year.

In the national capital, a 17-year-old girl became the victim of another heinous acid attack, following which one suspect was detained. The girl is reported to be in critical condition, and is currently under treatment at the Safdarjung Hospital.

The harrowing incident was caught on cam, visuals of which are making rounds of social media.

What Does the Video Show (Discretion Advised)

Blood-curdling footage of the incident shows two girls walking on the roadside of a busy road in broad daylight. Out of nowhere, a motorcycle enters the frame, and one of the two riders on the motorcycle throws acid on the 17-year-old girl. The girl can be seen holding her face and running, appearing to be in agonizing pain and anguish due to the acid attack.

Victim’s Father Breaks Silence

An NDTV report quoted the victim’s father saying, “My daughters, one aged 17 and the other 13, were out together this morning. Suddenly, two men on a bike threw acid at my elder daughter and drove away. They had covered their faces.”

It should be noted that while one person has been detained, there is no confirmation as to whether the attackers were juvenile or adults.

Notice Sent to Delhi Police

Meanwhile, Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal took to Twitter and took cognizance of the matter. “We have issued notice to Delhi Police to arrest the attackers & to give strict punishment to them. We’re helping the victim & her family. But the biggest question here is why retail sale of acid isn’t banned, even after several notices,” she was quoted saying by ANI.
