In a shocking incident, a woman reportedly convinced her husband to change his gender but is now seeking divorce after he changed into a “she”. According to a Dainik Bhaskar report, the incident came to light when a senior advocate and counsellor in Bhopal was approached with the case. Reportedly, the couple fell in love when they were in university, eloped to get married and lived happily in Delhi. However, the wife started insisting her husband to go through a gender transformation surgery. Two years into the procedure, which involves hormonal therapy, mental evaluation, and surgery, the woman decided that she no longer wants to be with her husband, who had transformed into a woman, as per the wife’s insisting. The woman has sought divorce on the ground of her husband not being able to give her a child.
The Facts of the Matter
Sarita Rajani, a senior advocate in Bhopal has been counselling a couple since the past 8 months. The couple’s marital problems are far complicated and complex than most problems that arise in a relationship. The couple comprises of a husband, who changed his gender as per her wife’s insisting, and a wife, who wants a divorce from her husband after the gender change.

Couple had Eloped to Get Married
Amit (name changed to protect identity) and Pooja (name changed to protect identity), were in relationship since they were in college. After their college, they decided to elope without telling their families and got married as per customs of Arya Samaj. Soon, they settled in Delhi and started working in a well-paying job in the national capital.
The Twist that Changed Everything
The biggest turn in Amit’s life came when he introduced his wife to his office colleague named Geeta (name changed to protect identity). Amit told his wife how Geeta was once a man and had undergone a gender change surgery. Soon, Amit’s wife and Geeta became good friends and started meeting frequently.
Being a caring person, Amit used to call his wife and used to tell his whereabouts and ask about the same from his wife. To this, his wife once retorted that the way Amit cares for him is like how a woman does and she jokingly suggested him to undergo a gender change procedure himself.

Joke Turns into Catastrophic Decision
Although the suggestion was made as a joke, both Amit and Pooja started to discuss the possibilities about the same. Soon, they decided to go through with their idea and consulted a doctor. According to a Dainik Bhaskar report, the doctors chose not to do a psychiatric evaluation of Amit, and straight away started the process.
For the unversed, the process of gender reassignment goes on for over 2 years. Initially, Amit started noticing hormonal changes in his body due to the hormonal therapy he was undergoing. For the next few months, he underwent therapy, and in the end, the doctor successfully completed the surgical part of the procedure.
Wife Seeks Divorce After Husband Turned Into “She”
A year and a half into her husband turning into a “she”, Pooja realized that she was not comfortable with the arrangement any more. Meanwhile, when Amit’s parents saw him after their son became a woman, they were shocked, and blamed Pooja for the same. Pooja soon left her husband and started living with her parents.
Reportedly, now Pooja doesn’t want to live with Amit. She wants to have her own child with her husband, who no longer is a man, and is seeking a divorce from her.
