In a tragic development, the elephant calf being raised by now popular ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ couple Bomman and Bellie, died due to ill health. For the unversed Bomman and Bellie were shown taking care of an elephant in the Academy Award winning documentary ‘The Elephant Whisperers’. The couple had recently taken a calf in its care, after finding it in a well in Dharmapuri.

According to reports, The calf had been separated from its herd, and the stress of this isolation took its toll on the animal’s well-being. In the initial days, everything appeared normal, and the celebrity elephant caretakers were optimistic about the calf’s prospects. However, as the days wore on, the situation took a turn for the worse. The calf began experiencing diarrhoea, and despite the best efforts of a team of veterinarians, it could not respond to treatment.

Eventually, the young elephant succumbed to its ailments and passed away in the early hours of Friday morning. The cause of death was determined to be a compromised digestive ability, brought about by the stress of separation from its herd, a new environment, and an artificial milk diet.

Bomman and the forest staff performed a ceremony before burning the carcass inside the forest area, and bid the calf an ultimate goodbye.

Weeks after their name was taken in the same sentence with words like “Academy Award” and “Best Documentary”, Bomman and Bellie, the now-turned celebrity elephant caretakers, have been struck with a tragic blow. The caretakers, who were seen in the now widely loved documentary ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ are in the news again, but this time for something tragic and heartbreaking.

After taking a separated elephant calf in their care, the couple were struck with tragedy as the calf passed away due to various ailments.

4-Month-Old Calf was Under Couple’s Care

Tragedy struck the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve’s elephant camp when the latest addition to the herd, a four-month-old calf, lost its life. The caretakers, Bomman and Bellie, had been caring for the calf since it was rescued from a well in Dharmapuri. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, the young elephant could not overcome the complications it faced.

Stress of Isolation Took Toll on Calf

The calf had been separated from its herd, and the stress of this isolation took its toll on the animal’s well-being. Initially, everything appeared to be normal, and the caretakers were optimistic about the calf’s chances. However, as the day progressed, the calf began experiencing diarrhoea and was not responding to treatment.

Autopsy Report Reveals Tragic Cause

A team of veterinarians tried to save the young calf, but it was to no avail. The elephant died in the early hours of Friday morning, leaving the caretakers devastated. The autopsy report showed that the compromised digestive ability of the calf caused due to separation from its herd, a new environment, and artificial milk led to the death. The veterinarians also found signs of pneumonia in the calf’s lungs.
