A ferocious bear was seen attacking and mauling a man in Tamil Nadu. 2 people were left critically injured in the shocking incident which ended with the bear getting captured. Hair-raising and chilling video surfacing on Twitter shows a man being viciously clawed and bitten as bystanders scream and shout in panic.

The incident was reported from PethanpillaiKudiiruppu village located near Gadana dam in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli district, and occurred earlier on Sunday. In the hair-raising video of the bear attack from Tamil Nadu, the carnivoran mammal is sitting on a man’s chest and mauling his face. While the man tries to budge and escape, he is no match for the bear’s ferocity and weight. Meanwhile, locals are heard screaming in pain and terror.

The injured people in the shocking bear attack were identified as Vaikundamani, Nagenthiran and Sailappan. Vaikundamani was reportedly on the way to sell snacks when he was attacked by the sloth bear.

After the injured were rushed to the hospital, scores of locals took to the streets and staged a protest in front of the Kadayam forest range office. Locals were enraged over the fact that the officials were not able to keep the solar fence operating. Further, the locals also alleged that the forest officials did not maintain a trench that prevents animal intrusion.

The Facts of the Matter

Due to increasing deforestation and urbanization, animal-human conflicts are at an all-time high. Every week, there’s a report of a leopards, tigers, or wild elephants coming on the crossroads with humans, and injuring them. Such reports also often tragically end with the wild animal being killed or injured.

In one such incident, a bear was witnessed attacking people in Tamil Nadu. The incident occurred in Pethanpillai Kudiiruppu village, located on the foothills of the Western Ghats. Shocking video of the bear mauling a man has since been going viral on social media.

What Does the Video Show?

Disturbing video of the incident shows the bear sitting over a man as he tries to somehow crawl his way away from the beast. The man is seen writhing in pain apparent from the way his legs are moving. The bear can be seen biting the man on his face and chest. Locals can also be heard screaming and shouting in terror. Meanwhile, the bear continues on its attack and mauls the man viciously.

The Attack As It Happened

The man being attacked by the bear in the video was identified as Vaikundamani who was on his way to sell masala packets on a two-wheeler. On a stretch to Pethanpillai, he was ambushed by the bear who attacked him. The bear threw Vaikundamani on the ground from his vehicle, and then proceeded to bite and maul him.

Soon, some locals rushed and tried to intervene. They pelted stones at the bear in a desperate bid to separate it from Vaikundamani. In process, the bear attacked two other men, identified as Nagenthiran and Sailappan.

Locals Stage protest, Bear Captured

Two of the three people attacked are reportedly critically injured. The trio were rushed to the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital, after which the locals protested in front of the Kadayam forest range office.

As per a New Indian Express report, the locals were enraged over the fact that the officials did not keep the solar fence operational, and also failed to maintain the trench which is kept in place to prevent such intrusions.

Later, the local forest officers and cops initiated a joint operation involving vets from Tirunelveli Veterinary College to capture the bear. The bear was captured after a sedative was administered.
