In Jharkhand, cable cars collision led to the deaths of at least 2 person and several injuries in a mishap that occurred earlier on Sunday. For now, IAF chopper has been brought in to conduct the rescue operation. It has been 19 hours since over 40 persons, including both women and children, have been stranded mid-air on the Trikut Hill ropeway.

On Sunday evening two cable cars on the Trikut Hill ropeway collided and brought the entire ropeway operation to a complete halt. As the rescue operation continues, stranded people are being assisted by bottles of water that are being sent through drones. Moreover, 2 MI-17 helicopters have also been invoked and the rescue operation is still underway.

Deoghar DC (Deputy Commissioner Manjunath Bhajantri said that following the mishap, local villagers joined forces with the National Disaster Relief Force personnel in the rescue operation. The Deoghar DC was quoted in an NDTV report saying, “The situation is completely under control. Some people are still stuck in the cable cars in the ropeway, and they are being rescued. All tourists are being evacuated safely”.

According to the Jharkhand Tourism, the Trikut ropeway is country’s highest vertical ropeway.

The Facts of the Matter

At least 10 tourists have been reported injured, and two dead, after two cable cars on a ropeway in Jharkhand collided with each other. The incident was reported from the Trikut Hill ropeway which is close to the Baba Badiyanath Temple, Deoghar, Jharkhand. It’s been 19 hours since the incident, and several tourists are still stuck in the ropeway cable cars.

Trikut Hill India’s Highest Vertical Ropeway

Earlier on Sunday evening, cable cars collision was reported from the Trikut Hill ropeway. For the unversed, it is the country’s highest vertical ropeway. The ropeway ride is about 20km from the Baba Badiyanath temple and is reported to be about 766m long and 392m high.

How 48 Persons Got Stranded in Ropeway Cars

On the occasion of Ram Navami, the popular spot amassed a footfall of hundreds of visitors. At around 5 pm on Sunday, one of the cable cars that was going down smashed with another one that was going upwards. This led to the entire operation being halted. A handful of tourists were rescued, but as many as 48 persons are still stranded in the 18 cars till the latest reports emerged.

As for the person who were rescued, they were rushed to the Deoghar Sadar Hospital for the treatment. Two people, including a woman, have been reported dead, while one person has been reported to be seriously injured.

NDRF Rushes to the Scene, Drones Being Made Use Of

Meanwhile, in the immediate aftermath of the mishap, the NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) was rushed to the scene and a rescue operation continues still, 19 hours after the incident. Some tourists are still stranded in the cable cars and water and refreshments are being sent to them through drones.

IAF Chopper Brought in to Expedite Rescue Op

To expedite the process of rescuing the stranded tourists and locals, the Jharkhand Administration reached out to the Indian Air Force. As of writing this article (12:30 IST), the IAF has already deployed two Mi-17 helicopters.

Among the stranded, one person has already been rescued and team of NDRF and ITBP are overseeing the operation.
