In a tragic incident reported from Kanpur, an electric bus ran over bystanders, killing at least 6 people and injuring about a dozen bystanders. The horrific accident occurred near Kanpur’s Tat Mill intersection. Reportedly, the bus driver lost the control of the speeding vehicle, and destroyed several cars and bikes that were in its way. The bus finally came to a halt after it hit a truck parked at a distance. Reportedly the bus driver has since been on the run and a wide search has been initiated by the local police. After the accident, President Ram Nath Kovind took to Twitter and condoled the deaths and expressed his grief. PM Narendra Modi also wished a speedy recovery to those injured in the tragic mishap.

Background

According to the Union Road Transport & Highways Ministry report, Uttar Pradesh city Kanpur registered fifth most road accident deaths and highest crash severity in the entire nation in 2019. Delhi was at the top of the list with 1,463 deaths due to road accidents. It was followed by Jaipur, Chennai and Bengaluru.

Meanwhile, Kanpur reported as many as 692 fatalities, an alarming number given its population is much lesser than Jaipur, Chennai and Bengaluru, and only one-fourth of Delhi’s population. The crash severity in Kanpur was also the highest among all cities with 45.5, meaning as many as 45 people died among 100 road accidents in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur.

Meanwhile, UP itself amounted to the highest traffic accident-related deaths in India in 2020, according to the National Crime Records Bureau data. The most populous state of India, UP registered as many as 30,593 accidents with 21,156 deaths.

The Facts of the Matter

On Sunday, January 30, an electric bus accident became the cause of death of at least 6 people after an electric bus lost control and run over them. As many as 15 people were reported present at the accident spot when the incident occurred. So far, three victims have been identified, and a probe is underway.

Further, at least 12 people were reported injured and were rushed to the nearest government hospital for treatment. The incident occurred near the Tat Mill intersection in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.

Brakes of Bus Had Failed, Bus Collided with Cars, Motorcycles

After the accident Kanpur East DCP Pramod Kumar spoke to the media and stated that the electric vehicle’s brakes failed at the time when it was being driven at the Tat Mill incline. As the brakes failed, the bus collided with at least three cars, multiple motorcycles.

It further collided with bystanders and the mayhem came to a bitter end after the out-of-control vehicle hit a truck.  The DCP further added that a search for the bus-driver has been initiated.

President Ram Nath Kovind Expressed Grief

After the accident, President Ram Nath Kovind took to Twitter and expressed his grief. “Deeply saddened by the news of many casualties in the Kanpur bus accident. My deepest condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in this incident. I wish the injured people a speedy recovery,” he tweeted.

PM Modi Wishes Speedy Recovery to Injured

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also took to Twitter and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. “Very sad to know about the road accident in Babupurwa area of Kanpur. My deepest condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives in this. Along with this, I wish a speedy recovery to all those injured in this accident,” PM Modi tweeted.

“Instructions Given to Authorities..”: UP CM Adityanath

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took to Twitter and stated that the administration has been directed to provide every possible treatment to those injured. “The death of people in a road accident in Kanpur is very sad. May Almighty grant the departed souls a place at his feet and strength to the bereaved family members to bear this unfathomable loss. Instructions have been given to the administration to provide all possible medical aid to the injured,” the UP CM tweeted
