In a concerning development, 7 people were charred to death and 28 were reported injured after a major fire hit a 20-storey building in Tardeo, Mumbai. The fire-department has labelled the mishap as a Level 3 incident, meaning a major emergency call. The fire broke out as early as 7.30 am on Saturday in Kamala Building’s 18th floor. The building is located near the Bhatia Hospital in Nana Chowk, Tardeo.

After the reports of the fire broke out as many as 13 fire tenders were rushed to douse the blaze while 5 ambulances were rushed to serve the victims. 2 persons were declared dead on arrival while 3 persons could not be saved and succumbed to their injuries. One more person later succumbed to their wounds. Mumbai minister Aaditya Rao Thackeray claimed that he was in touch with the response team.

Background

According to the National Crime Records Bureau report from 2018, at least 35 Indians were victims of fire accidents on a daily basis. In 2018, as many as 12,748 persons died due to fire related accidents. While 4,290 persons belonged to the 18-30 age group, as many as 3,860 persons belonged in the 30-45 age group. Interestingly enough, the data also suggested that most fire victims were women. Of the total fire related deaths in 2018, as many as 7,244 victims were women.

With more fire related compliances that most infrastructure projects need to adhere to, the accidents are meant to drop. However, fire-related incidents are still not considered isolated events and every now-and-then, such reports emerge from both metro and smaller cities.

The Facts of the Matter

At least 7 people were reported dead after a level-III fire broke out in a high-rise bulding in Mumbai’s Tardeo. Moreover, several news media outlets are reporting that over a dozen persons are injured due to the accidents. While the number of injured persons range from 18 to 28, depending upon which news outlet one believes, it is confirmed that the toll of injured persons is increasing.

The fire broke out inside a 20-storey residential building earlier this morning. The fire broke out in the 18th floor of the Kamala building that’s located right opposite Gandhi Hospital at Gowalia Tank. As the fire broke out, several locals took videos of the blazing high-rise building and shared it on microblogging platform Twitter.

While some visuals show the massive cloud of ashy smoke dispersing in the sky, others showed a balcony engulfed in a fire. Visuals also show fire-fighters assembled and working towards controlling the fire.

13 Fire Tenders, 7 Water Jetties Rushed to Douse Fire

The fire reportedly broke out some time around 7.30am. The fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot and as many as 13 fire tenders were rushed to the spot. 7 water jetties were also involved in dousing the fire. The fire brigade personnel have confirmed the mishap to be a level-III fire.

Reportedly, off the injured four people succumbed to their injuries at the Nair hospital. One injured succumbed to their injuries at the Kasturba hospital and another person died after being rushed to the Bhatia hospital.

Fire Caused Due to Short Circuit: Mumbai Mayor

Meanwhile, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar claimed that some of the injured who were hospitalized were facing issues with breathing due to suffocation. While the cause of the fire has not yet been ascertained, she claimed that initial investigation suggests that the fire could’ve been caused due to a short circuit.

Mumbai minister Aaditya Thackeray also took to Twitter and claimed that he was in contact with the response team. “In touch with the authorities regarding the fire outbreak at the Kamala building in Tardeo. The fire brigade and the police are on site. Rescue and cooling operations are underway.”
