Outrage erupted on social media today as reports of athletes being emptied from Delhi stadium so that an IAS officer could walk his dog went viral.

The news was brought to the fore after Indian Express ran a report which stated that athletes and coaches at the Thyagraj Stadium have been forced to wrap their training as Delhi’s Principal Secretary has to walk his dog at the facility.

The IAS officer in question is Mr. Sanjeev Khirwar, who has been caught on cam taking a casual stroll with his dog at the facility.

“We used to train till 8-8.30 pm under lights earlier. But now, we are asked to leave the ground by 7 pm so that the officer can walk his dog on the ground. Our training and practice routine has been disrupted,” the Indian Express report quoted a coach saying.

Meanwhile, the IAS officer has claimed that he visits the stadium when it is supposed to close. He also added that he doesn’t leave the pet on the track. He added that he would never ask athletes to leave the stadium as it is for them to train. He added that if his actions are objectionable, he will stop them.

The Facts of the Matter

Often, government employees in India, who are employed to serve the nation, are seen working in self-interest with an unparalleled self-entitlement. Recently, an allegation of similar nature has been drawn out at Delhi’s Principal Secretary (Revenue), Mr. Sanjeev Khirwar. It has been alleged that the Thyagraj Stadium in Delhi is emptied so that Mr. Khirwar could walk his dog.

Athletes Forced to wrap Practice for IAS Officer’s Walk with Dog

The incident came to the fore after The Indian Express ran an exclusive report about the matter. As per the report, in the past few months, both coaches and athletes at the stadium are forced to wrap their training session by 7 pm, so that the IAS officer could walk with his dog at the facility about 7.30 pm.

“We used to train till 8-8.30 pm under lights earlier. But now, we are asked to leave the ground by 7 pm so that the officer can walk his dog on the ground. Our training and practice routine has been disrupted,” a coach was quoted saying.

The newspaper also reported sending its reporters thrice in the past week. The reporters stated that in security personnel were seen blowing whistles to make sure the stadium was vacated by 7 pm.

Outrage on Twitter over IAS Walking Dog in Stadium Row

Following the report, netizens on Twitter have called out the entitlement of the IAS officer for allegedly getting the stadium cleared to take a walk with his dog.

Administration Claims “Not Aware” of IAS Officer Using Stadium

Following the heat the matter received, the Thyagraj Stadium administrator told media that the official timing of the stadium is 4-6 pm, however, due to the heat, athletes are being allowed to train till 7. He also added that he wasn’t aware of the IAS officer using the stadium after 7 pm.

Meanwhile, 1994-batch IAS officer Khirwar refuted the allegation drawn out against him and said that he only “sometimes” takes his pet for a walk. He refuted the allegations of disrupting the practice of athletes at the Thyagraj Stadium.

He added that when he takes the pet on walk, he doesn’t leave the dog on the track. He added that when he visits, he makes sure to visit when the stadium is closed.

Delhi CM Issues New Directive After Outrage

After the exclusive report of Indian Express broke, and netizens outraged over the matter, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal issued new directives. Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia took to Twitter on May 26, and tweeted – “News reports have brought to our notice that certain sports facilities are being closed early causing inconvenience to sportsmen who wish to play till late nite. CM @ArvindKejriwal has directed that all Delhi Govt sports facilities to stay open for sportsmen till 10pm”.
