In the pre-dawn hours of Sunday, June 2, 2024, a potential railway disaster was averted near Sirhind, Punjab. Around 4:00 am, a moving goods train collided with a stationary one at Madhopur area, causing one engine to flip over and hit a passenger train on an adjacent track.

Swift Response Saves Lives

Despite the dramatic collision, there were no fatalities. Two loco pilots, Vikas Kumar and Himanshu Kumar, sustained injuries and were promptly taken to Sri Fatehgarh Sahib Civil Hospital. Kumar suffered a head injury, while Himanshu hurt his back. Both were later referred to Patiala’s Rajindra Hospital for specialized care.

Ratan Lal from the Government Railway Police Sirhind stated, “We received information at 3:45 am and reached the spot immediately. No casualties have been reported.”

Railway Team’s Quick Action

The railway team acted swiftly to clear the debris and remove carriages from the track. Their efficient work aims to restore normal train operations soon. Meanwhile, trains are being diverted through Rajpura, Patiala, and Dhuri to manage disruptions.

Safety Concerns Rise

This incident follows recent derailments in Palghar and Odisha, raising concerns about railway safety. Experts suggest a need for enhanced track maintenance and signaling systems to prevent such accidents.
