In what seemed to be a dark replay of scenes from Priyadarshan’s Hulchul, two men carried a dead body of a 66-year-old man into a post office to claim pension. In filmmaker Priyadarshan’s Hulchul, actor Manoj Joshi’s character, who was unconscious, was carried around as a prop by other actors to give an appearance that he is conscious.
Similarly, Hollywood’s cult comedy Weekend at Bernie’s also showed a similar act. In an incident where life imitated fiction, two men attempted to claim a deceased’s man pension by carrying his body as a prop in order to claim the money. The incident was reported from Carlow, Ireland.
The Facts of the Matter
A corpse, a pension to be claimed, and two men with an outlandish plan – these are just some ingredients you need for a part-shocking and part-hilarious crime to be committed. While the Garda (the Irish law-enforcement authority) found out about two men carrying a corpse into a post-office in a bid to claim the deceased’s pension, they were flabbergasted. Soon they swung into action and more details about the incident were revealed.

Corpse Dressed in Jumper, Hat
Reportedly, the two men carried the corpse of a 66-year-old man identified as Peadar Doyle. The Irish Police claimed that the elderly man’s face was concealed with a jumper and his head was also covered with a hat.
Earlier, the two culprits, in their 30s, had walked into the post-office and sought the pension money of Mr. Peadar. However, the person-in-charge claimed that the presence of their next of kin or presence of Mr. Peadar himself was required. What happened next is truly baffling and horrifying on several levels.

Employee Raises Alarm
The two men, determined to get their hands on the pension money, went to Mr. Peadar’s home and carried his corpse to claim the pension. The employee at the post-office looked at the elderly man, and seeing his appearance, asked the two men whether he was doing well.
The men told the post office employee that Mr. Peadar was having a heart attack and soon the ambulances were called. Meanwhile, the two men stayed put at the post-office and didn’t try to flee or create a scene.
However, later a woman alleged that her daughter saw the two men carrying the elderly’s corpse into the building. Since no cash was exchanged at this point, the two men fled the scene. “She was leaving my house at the time and said the man looked unwell as his feet were dragging [along] the ground,” the woman was quoted by the Irish Independent.
She was further quoted saying, “I feel awful for the staff. I’ve a 12-year-old daughter and I’m trying to explain to her what happened and sure where do you start? It’s awful.”

Investigation Underway, Mayor Shocked
The Mayor of Carlow claimed that he was shocked to hear about the incident. “I cannot believe anyone would do something like that. Its beggars’ belief, I’m just shocked,” he further added, as quoted by Daily Mail. The Iaw enforcement authorities are investigating whether the old man may have been dead for over the last two days until the Friday’s event took place.
