Since the release of Amazon Prime Video’s critically acclaimed show ‘Dahaad’, netizens have been scouring the lengths and depths of articles, in a pursuit to know whether the story is based on real incidents.

Starring Sonakshi Sinha, Gulshan Devaiah, and Vijay Varma, the Dahaad is a police-procedural drama, based in a small village of Rajasthan. The show starts with the humble but efficient police officers posted in Mandawa village investigating the case of inter-faith love affair.

However, what starts with a timely topic, quickly evolves into a cat-and-mouse chase between the cops, and a serial killer responsible for the disappearance and death of 22 innocent women, hailing from marginalized society.

According to reports, the show is loosely based on the life and crimes of notorious Indian serial killer “Cyanide Mohan” aka Mohan Kumar.

Mohan Kumar, also known as ” Cyanide Mohan” due to his preferred method of murder left a trail of terror and death across the southern states of India. He targeted vulnerable women, primarily widows, who were seeking companionship and security. Luring them with promises of marriage or lucrative job opportunities, he gained their trust before subjecting them to a horrifying fate.

The elusive killer’s mobility and ability to change identities made it challenging for investigators to link the crimes, and he was eventually arrested in 2009.

The Facts of the Matter

Vijay Varma, Sonakshi Sinha, and Gulshan Devaiah have set the stage ablaze with his extraordinary acting in the gripping crime drama series, Dahaad. Since its much-anticipated premiere on Prime Video on May 12, Varma is especially earning plaudits for his spine-chilling portrayal of a serial killer named Anand Swarnakar.

However, what adds an eerie layer of reality to Varma’s character is the striking resemblance to a real-life serial killer, Mohan Kumar, better known as Cyanide Mohan. Just as the plot of Dahaad delves into the haunting depths of the human psyche, it draws uncanny parallels to the chilling crimes committed by Cyanide Mohan, who terrorized Karnataka between 2003 and 2009.

Mohan Kumar had Ability to Charm and Manipulate People

Born into an ordinary family in the quiet town of Puttur, Karnataka, Mohan Kumar appeared to lead an unremarkable life. From an early age, he displayed exceptional charm and charisma, traits that would later prove instrumental in his deadly exploits.

Mohan Kumar’s life was a tapestry of deception, woven with meticulous precision. He presented himself as a well-mannered and charming individual, posing as a teacher, capable of effortlessly winning the trust of unsuspecting victims.

Cyanide Mohan’s MO

Cyanide Mohan’s modus operandi was as cold and calculated as his moniker suggested. He carefully selected his targets, often focusing on vulnerable women, preying on their hopes and dreams. Posing as a wealthy businessman or a humble suitor seeking companionship, Mohan Kumar lured them into his sinister trap.

Once he gained their trust, he used to take them to secluded spot, and have physical relations with them. He would them give these victims cyanide laced contraceptive pill, and used to manipulate the women into taking the pill to avoid risks.
