In an eye-opening news, 3 people were booked in Tamil Nadu for spewing slurs at a man about his caste and denying him a haircut because of the same. Thanks to the power of social media, the entire ordeal went viral as the man had recorded the atrocious behaviour towards him. The man reportedly belongs to a marginalized Hindu community and was shoved off a salon where he had reached to get a haircut.

The incident was reported from Salem, Tamil Nadu and the victim of discrimination is 26-year-old Poovarasan. The man went on to lodge a complaint at a police station and the 3 persons involved in the matter have been booked under the SC/ST Act. It is also reported that the police have formed a team to nab the absconding.

Background

Discrimination based on caste, creed, colour and gender have been criminalized. Yet it continues to hollow the integrity and progress of our nation like termites.

According to National Crime Records Bureau report, crimes against people belonging in marginalized communities surged over 9% in India from 2019 to 2020. While Uttar Pradesh topped the chart by having as many as 12,714 cases, Bihar, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh followed closely with 7,368, 7107 and 6,899 cases respectively.

Recently, another report emerged from Tamil Nadu where a man was on the receiving end of discrimination.

The Facts of the Matter

3 people, including a barber and the salon owner where the barber worked, were booked in Tamil Nadu’s Salem district. The salon owner and the barber had reportedly refused a patron the haircut he had come from as he belonged to the Dalit community. The perpetrators further spewed casteist slurs against the man.

Poovarasan Takes Phone Out, Records Discriminatory Behavior

26-year-old Poovarasan had no idea that he would be on the receiving end of a caste-based discrimination when he went to get a haircut. However, when he reached the salon, he was denied the haircut. He went on to take his phone out and recorded the whole ordeal. The video of the discrimination soon got viral with people raising their voices against the issue.

What Did the Video Show?

In the video now gone viral, the haircut salon owner can be seen shooing off Poovarasan and telling him that he will not give him the haircut. Further, people with understanding of the native language will also hear the salon owner and the barber spewing casteist slurs at the victim.

While the salon owner continued with her atrocious tirade, the barber can be heard telling Poovarasan to complain to whoever he wishes to.

Man Takes To Police, Complaint Raised

Poovarasan later took to the Thalavasal police station and filed an FIR against the barber, salon owner and another accomplice. The police have reportedly booked the barber Loganathan, the salon owner Annakilli, and another man Palanivel under multiple sections of the SC/ST Act. Further a team has also been formed to nab those who are still absconding.

3 Involved Booked Under SC/ST Amendment Act, 2015

Palanivel, Annakilli and Loganathan have been booked under Section 3(1)(s) (abusing any member of a Scheduled Caste or a Scheduled Tribe by caste name in any place within public view) Section 3(1)(za) (D) (stopping from entering any educational institution, hospital, dispensary, primary health centre, shop or place of public entertainment or any public place).
