In a blood-curdling incident, a 6-year-old girl from Maharashtra was raped in an express train by a 25-year-old man near Madhya Pradesh’s Itarsi. The minor survivor reportedly belongs from Badlapur in Thane district and was aboard the Kashi express train with her mother and four sisters. The accused was caught red-handed by the survivor’s mother who along with other passengers kept him hostage and later handed him to the government railway police personnel, Kalyan. An FIR was filed against the accused and he was later handed to the Itarsi Government Railway Police as the incident came under its jurisdiction.

The news comes just a few days after a woman was raped in a moving train by a pantry manager who was alleged to have committed the crime. The Delhi-based survivor was aboard the Karnataka Sampark Kranti Train and the incident transpired when the train had taken a halt in Bhopal.

Background

Thanks to an RTI query filed by an activist, a harrowing statistic pertaining to crimes against women emerged in 2020. As per the data, as many as 165 rape cases against women were reported on railway premises and onboard the trains between the years 2017 to 2019.

The numbers widely fluctuated each year with 51 such cases reported in 2017, 44 cases in 2019 and a sharp spike coming in 2018 with 70 such cases. According to the RTI query reply, 29 rape incidents were reported on running trains while 136 cases were reported on the premises.

Given how a significant number of such cases often remain under reported, it is safe to say that women are equally unsafe in government run transports, as when they are working in offices, or staying at homes.
