An alert driver of the Udaipur-Jaipur Vande Bharat Express prevented a major accident on Monday morning by applying emergency brakes after noticing obstructions on the railway track. The train was on its way from Udaipur to Jaipur when the obstruction was spotted between Gangarar and Soniyana section at around 9:55 am.
Driver Spots Stones and Rods on Track
According to officials from North Western Railway, the driver noticed stones, pebbles and metal clips used for connecting tracks placed on the track. He immediately applied emergency brakes to bring the train to a halt. There was no damage to the train and after inspecting the site, the track was cleared so the train could resume its journey.
A video circulating on social media shows the obstruction on the track including stones and metal rods lying on the joggle plate. Railway Protection Force (RPF) officials along with local police visited the site and an inquiry has been initiated. A case has been registered under the Railways Act.

Timely Action Prevents Major Mishap
The timely action by the alert driver prevented a major tragedy as the stones and rods could have resulted in derailing or damaging the semi-high speed Vande Bharat Express.
Officials say the train was running at its normal high speed when the obstruction was noticed. Had it collided with the objects at that speed, the results could have been disastrous.
This is not the first time such an incident has occurred on the Vande Bharat Express. In May, over 13 cases of stone pelting were reported on the Ajmer-Delhi Vande Bharat route, damaging the glass panes.

Improved Safety Measures On Vande Bharat Express
The Vande Bharat Express is the fastest train in India with a maximum speed of 180 kmph. However, improved safety measures are needed to prevent incidents of obstruction and stone pelting especially on the semi-high speed trains.
Installation of stronger windows, speed restrictions in vulnerable areas, increased security presence and surveillance can help boost safely. Multi-layered security checks, fines and penalties can also deter mischief mongers.
The Railways has said the Vande Bharat trains will be cleaned in just 14 minutes at destinations under the “14 minutes of miracle” concept adapted from Japan’s bullet trains. This will allow quick turnaround of the trains. With more Vande Bharat trains planned, their safe and efficient functioning will be key.
The alertness displayed by the Vande Bharat Express driver prevented potential loss of lives in a major accident. The Railways must review safety mechanisms to prevent such incidents in the future. Only stringent measures and awareness campaigns can deter anti-social activities targeting the prestigious trains.
