A Kerala-based cop was recently felicitated by the state police for going above and beyond duty by breastfeeding a famished infant separated from the mother. The 12-day-old infant is currently in the crossfire due to a row between the mother and father. After finding out that a female cop has been giving the child proper care, various personalities, including Kerala High Court judge and state DGP praised the officer.
The officer, identified as M R Ramya, was hailed in a letter penned by Kerala High Court judge Justice Devan Ramachandran. “You are, today, the face of policing at its best. A fine officer and a true mother – you are both! “The nectar of life is a divine gift, which only a mother can give and you offered it while on duty. You keep alive the hope of humanism for the future in all of us,” the letter read, as quoted by Indian Express.
A native of Kozhikode, M R Ramya is the mother of two children – aged four and one-year-old. While her husband is a school teacher, she is part of the armed police battalion. In an interview, Ramya mentioned that her family, including her husband, was extremely happy and supportive of her endevours when they found out about her actions.
The Facts of the Matter
A cop is usually assumed to be a person who is responsible to manage law and order. However, they are also public servents, and are often known for going above and beyond the call of duty to serve for the greater good. Case in point, Kerala cop M R Ramya, who was recently in the news for breastfeeding a famished infant who was separated from the mother.

The Curious Case of Missing Infant
It so happened that earlier on October 29, an infant’s mother filed a complaint alleging that her child was missing. She also added that she was having a dispute with her husband, and alleged that he took the infant away from her.
The police initiated an investigation, and based on the inputs that the man may have gone to Bengaluru, alerted all the checkpoints on the Waynad border. During the checking of the vehicles, a cop found the baby and the father.

Kerala Cop Decides to Breast Feed Infant
The 12-month-old baby was rushed to a local hospital where its condition deteriorated as the child was devoid of mother’s milk. The infant’s sugar was low, and authorities were in tizzy as to how the little kid’s life be saved.
This was when M R Ramya decided to go above and beyond the call of duty. A nursing mother herself, she decided to breastfeed the infant and save its life. After the baby’s health got better, it was taken to the mother.
“Satisfying day”
“That night, while returning home, we did not get food from anywhere…all hotels were closed. I told my husband that I just need a cup of water. It was such a satisfying day. We could unite the baby with its mother,” Ramya said in an interview, as per an NDTV report.
“Hope of humanism”: M R Ramya Felicitated
For her fine deed, Ramya was felicitated by the state police. Further, she also received a letter drafted by Kerala High Court judge Justice Devan Ramachandran who hailed her as the “hope of humanism”.
