On Tuesday, netizens on Twitter used the platform to express their outrage at Spotify removing Zee Music albums that include best-selling singles from films like Kalank, Kedarnath, & more. The issue, which is now reported to be due to licensing dispute, has prompted Twitter users to wonder why they bought Spotify Premium membership if they are not able to hear some hum-worthy tunes.

Music fans in India were left disappointed after Spotify removed Zee Music Company’s entire catalog from its platform due to a failed renewal of their licensing agreement. The move means that some of the most popular Bollywood soundtracks, including the number one song on Spotify in India for the past two weeks, “Apna Bana Le” from the movie “Bhediya,” are no longer available on the platform.

Zee Music, which has a massive subscriber base of 93.6 million on YouTube, had previously cut ties with Gaana earlier in 2022 before the audio-streaming platform became a subscription-only service. As one of India’s largest domestic record labels, Zee Music’s catalog also includes the soundtracks to hit Bollywood films such as “Veere Di Wedding” and “Gully Boy,” which fans are now unable to access on Spotify.

In a statement, Spotify said that it has tried to find creative ways to strike a deal with Zee Music and that negotiations are ongoing.
