In a major development that came from the world of cricket, Virat Kohli announced stepping down as India T20 captain after the upcoming T20 world cup concludes. Meanwhile, it’s also being speculated that ‘hitman’ Rohit Sharma will be leading the team in the shortest format of the white ball cricket.

Kohli, a prominent promotor of Test cricket has a decent record of when it comes to T20. Although nowhere close to former T20 trailblazer Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Kohli has a record of being second most successful T20 captain in Indian cricket.

The Facts of the Matter

On September 17, India ODI and Test team skipper Virat Kohli took to Twitter and issued a statement on his denouncement of team’s captain’s seat.

“I have given everything to the Team during my time as T20 Captain and I will continue to do so for the T20 Team as batsman moving forward,” Kohli’s statement read.

“I’ve decided to step down as the T20 Captain after this T20 World Cup in Dubai in October. I will continue to serve Indian Cricket and the Indian Team to the best of my ability”.

Why Kohli Stepped Down as T20 Captain?

According to his statement, Kohli’s decision to step down as T20 captain comes from his intense workload. “…Considering my immense workload over the last 8-9 years playing all 3 formats and captaining regularly for the 5-6 years, I feel like I need to give myself space to be fully ready to lead the Indian Team in Test and ODI cricket”, his statement read.

Virat also expressed gratitude to his team mates and everyone who was part of his journey. “I thank everyone who has supported me in my journey as the Captain of the Indian Cricket Team. I couldn’t have done it without them – the boys, the support staff, the committee, my coaches, and every Indian who prayed for us to win”, his statement said.

Virat Kohli VS Rohit Sharma – The Statistical Review

It should be noted that after Kohli steps down as the T20 captain, it is his deputy Rohit Sharma who will be taking the mantle. While Kohli has led his team in a slew of matches, Sharma too has got an impeccable record to show.

After being appointed as T20I captain in 2017, Kohli led his team through 45 T20 matches so far. Under his leadership, the team won 29 matches while lost 14. He has an impressive win percentage of just about 65%.

Meanwhile, Sharma was given the reigns of the T20 team for the first time in 2017. Since then, he led the team in 19 matches. In those 19 total games, India won 15 matches while lost 4. And thus, he has an impressive win percentage of 78.9%.
