In a shocking incident reported from Gurugram, some village locals recently made authorities repair broken road overnight on gunpoint, following which 30 people were booked. The incident was reported from Naurangpur village where 30 locals forced workers to construct a path for their village overnight.

The incident came to the fore after a complaint was filed by a sub-divisional officer of the civic body. In the complaint, it was alleged that a team of GMDA workers & a private contractor, were on a site when 30 locals assaulted the workers, abused the staff, and forced them to lay a 50-meter road in front of a petrol pump at gun point.

A GMDA official was quoted in a Hindustan Times report saying, “GMDA does not tolerate such actions–interfering with the government projects and manhandling the staff members while on duty. Strict action has been initiated by the police.”

Meanwhile, one of the accused told the police that locals resorted to such measures because at least 20 mishaps and accidents have taken place on the particular stretch of road. The stretch of road is filled with potholes and gets waterlogged most of the year.

A case was filed against the accused under multiple sections of IPC, including section 148 (rioting), section 506 (criminal intimidation), section 353 (criminal force to deter public servant) and more.

The Facts of the Matter

Reports of citizens of various states in India resorting to quirky pretests against pothole menace and conditions of road are dime a dozen. Amid all this, some locals in Gurugram went one step further from protest, and simply got workers to repair a broken road overnight on gunpoint.

The incident was reported from Naurangpur village and so far, as many as 30 persons were booked regarding the incident.

The matter came to the fore after a Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) officer filed a complaint with the Kherki Daula police station. In the complaint, the officer alleged that on Tuesday, a team of workers, GMDA officers and a private contractor were working on a different site when 30 villagers ambushed them and started abusing them.

How Villagers Got GMDA Workers to “Work”

The complainant alleged that the accused group assaulted the GMDA workers and team, and took away their three machines along with some construction materials. The 30 villagers then held the team at gunpoint, and forced them to lay a 50-meter road patch.

The complainant also claimed that the accused had come with weapons & sticks. They manhandled the GMDA team who was working on different allotted site.

Locals Booked for Rioting, Intimidation

Following the incident, the police registered a case against the 30 accused based on multiple sections of the IPC. This includes section 148 (rioting), section 506 (criminal intimidation), section 353 (assault against public servant), section 427 (causing danger), section 186 (obstructing public servant), and more.

GMDA Issues Statement

The GMDA also took cognizance of the incident, and issued a statement. “GMDA does not tolerate such actions–interfering with the government projects and manhandling the staff members while on duty. Strict action has been initiated by the police,” the statement of GMDA read, as per a Hindustan Times report.

Why Locals Resorted to Such Measures

One of the suspects arrested was identified as Hoshiar Singh. During the investigation, the police were told that the locals resorted to such measures after being frustrated with the condition of the particular stretch of road which they forcefully got repaired.

Locals told police that in the last two months, at least 20 accidents took place on the particular stretch. The road is filled with potholes and gets waterlogged for the most part of the year. Further, the locals also claimed that they met officials, wrote applications regarding the same, however their efforts were in vain.
