Due to skewed gender ratio, Solapur-based bachelors were forced to march with ‘band baja’ seeking brides for their imminent marriage. Asking for the government’s intervention, the bachelors addressed their problem by going for a unique protest, which would somehow shed light on the issue.

The protest was organized by a local outfit, which also put forward a memorandum to the district collector’s office. The memorandum sought implementation of pre-conception and pre-natal diagnostic technique (PCPNDT) act in the state, to make sure the male-female ratio gets better.

Visuals making rounds of social media shows several bachelors dressed in wedding outfits, riding the customary wedding horses, and having the band follow them with ‘baraat’ music playing in the background. Instead of seeking a bribe to stop their protest, the protesting bachelors sought brides – shedding light on the skewed gender ratio in the state.

Ramesh Baraskar, the founder of the Jyoti Kranti Parishad, which organised the event, was quoted by local media saying, “People may mock this morcha, but the grim reality is that youth of marriageable age are not getting brides just because the male-female ratio is skewed in the state.”

The official National Family Health Survey (2019-21) states that Maharashtra’s sex ratio was 920 females per 1,000 males. However, Ramesh said that the ratio is 889 females per 1,000 males.

The Facts of the Matter

The fifth National Family Health Survey (NFHS) for 2019-2021 stated that India has more women than man, with 1,020 females for every 1,000 males. However, the ratio in skewed in some states more than others.

Case in point Maharashtra, where bachelors from the Solapur city took a unique step to shed light on the skewed gender ratio in the state.

‘Band Baja’ But no Baraat for Solapur Bachelors

To get the government’s attention at the glaring grassroot-level issue, several bachelors in Solapur marched with ‘band baja’ wearing wedding outfits. They reportedly took the march to the collector’s office.

Visuals surfacing from the unique protest shows several bachelors riding the customary wedding horse, with a marching band performing wedding tunes in the background. The bachelors are also seen holding placards with witty, humours and hard-hitting slogans in Marathi regarding the gender-ratio issue in the state.

“People may mock..”

The procession-slash-protest was organized by Ramesh Baraskar, the founder of a local outfit called Jyoti Kranti Parishad. “People may mock this morcha, but the grim reality is that youth of marriageable age are not getting brides just because the male-female ratio is skewed in the state,” he said.

Explaining the situation further, Ramesh said that Maharashtra currently has 889 girls per 1,000 boys. “This inequality exists because of female foeticide and the government is responsible for this disparity,” he stated.

It should be noted that the official data from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) for 2019-2021, Maharashtra’s sex ratio stood at 913 females for 1,000 males. In the earlier survey conducted over five years ago, the sex ratio stood 924 females/1000 boys.
